At the 2019 European Youth Olympics Festival held in Baku in July, Joseph represented Great Britain in 400m freestyle and 1500m freestyle, setting pbs in both events.

This international selection was based on his performances at the

2019 British National Championships & Trials held in Scotland in March from the following results

  • 400m freestyle, 16 yrs/under 2nd
  • 800m freestyle, 16 yrs/under 1st
  • 1500m freestyle, 16 yrs/under 1st

From Richard Blackshaw, his coach at Stockport Metro at the time of his selection

“Joe joined Stockport Metro in 2010 age 6, every coach that worked with Joe from Stuart Sant, Martin Brooks, Lucas Connolly and more recently Richard Blackshaw. All have a massive amount of respect for Joseph, his effort, focus, dedication and consistency set him apart from most swimmers, improving at a faster rate than most not only due to talent but due to character.  Joe is an athlete that fully deserves this award and every success he gains in the future.”

Joseph has now moved on to Millfield School and we will follow his progress at national and international levels in the years to come.  Richard Blackshaw, in particular, as the newly appointed Swim England national talent officer. will be monitoring Joseph’s performances very closely.

Richard Blackshaw completed 15 years as a coach at Stockport Metro and took up his post at Swim England last week. His replacement as Head Coach will be Mandy Bell from this Thursday 7th November.
