The British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway

The British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway is an all-inclusive programme which takes the non swimmer from his or her first splash to developing confidence and competence in the water. Read on to learn more.

Already the most successful sports programme of its kind, the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway is a refreshed version of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS).

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming has been developed by the Amateur Swimming Association to provide a template for learns to swim schemes across the UK. It is a comprehensive, integrated and progressive teaching programme based on sound technical and educational principles and provides a standard reference for those responsible for planning swimming programmes, such as:

  • Sets a national standard for performance
  • Structures lessons to ensure progress based on achievement
  • Develop a wide range of water based skills
  • Emphasises the importance of fundamental skills
  • Develops high reliability through repetition, revision and consolidation
  • Identifies the correct standards of skill performance
  • Provides assessment against clearly identified outcomes

The idea being that each of the Stages has a fixed set of lesson plans, so that a swimming teacher who takes a class for Stage 3, week 4 can extract a lesson plan from the Lesson Plans folder and then knows exactly what to do and what level the pupils are at.

Each class for each Stage has a register for each child; this register is completed by the Swimming Teacher at the end of each lesson and reflects each child’s achievement during that lesson.
